Perioral dermatitis: what it is, how we treat it & FAQs
A common facial rash of small red or skin-colored bumps and mild scaling, usually around the mouth, nose, or eyes. It can sting, burn, or feel tight.
Clusters of small bumps with mild flaking, classically sparing the narrow band of skin right next to the lips. It can come and go and may feel irritated.
Common triggers include topical steroid use on the face, heavy creams and occlusive products, fluoridated toothpaste, and some cosmetics. Skin-barrier disruption and hormones can play a role.
Treatment usually starts by stopping the trigger — especially topical steroids — and simplifying your skincare, along with a topical such as metronidazole or azelaic acid and sometimes a course of an oral antibiotic like doxycycline.
When you stop a topical steroid, the rash can briefly flare before it gets better. Your provider will walk you through this so you know what to expect.
Many people improve over 4 to 8 weeks, though some cases take a few months and do best with a steady, gentle routine.
Yes, it can recur — especially with steroid creams or heavy products. A simple, consistent routine helps prevent future flares.
